The swimming pool size and position had already been planned and the Alitex greenhouse on order, so the main design challenge for this project was how to relate these key features and provide the requested formal layout given that a significant level change existed across the site.
To create the desired effect the design is set on one long ‘vista’ of some 60 metres, a visual line that connects all three garden rooms without there existing a physical path. At one end sits the greenhouse with a wonderful view through the planting, over the swimming pool, up the steps and between the metal pergolas, over the Allison Armour water feature and on up a second flight of steps, continuing across the new raised lawn to an existing cedar tree.
In addition to this visual anchor, the pool garden and the kitchen garden are on the same level achieved by the detailing of a series of low brick retaining walls and generously wide steps.
The swimming pool terrace, paved in a gorgeous beige limestone, is designed to be the main family space whether one is enjoying a vigorous swim against the counter current, relaxing in the hot tub, lounging with a good book or enjoying the fruits of the kitchen garden at the elegant Italian dining table. There is ample room for the whole family and more.
The garden is less than a year old at the time of these images (2021) and so as the planting volumes mature the sense of intimacy in each space will increase and be managed to the desired effect.
